Seals Continues to Urge Strong Sanctions on Iran
Today, Democratic Congressional Candidate Dan Seals reiterated the necessity of tough economic sanctions against Iran.
“We must do everything within our power to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons,” said Seals. “A nuclear-armed Iran threatens not only the vital interests of the United States and its allies, but the very existence of Israel. We have a moral and strategic obligation to stand firmly and unequivocally with Israel.”
Just last week, Iran violated an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency by enriching its uranium to a level closer to weapons-grade in the absence of atomic energy inspectors. Instead of halting its program, Iran is expanding its program, which may leave Israel no choice but to take military action against Iran.
“Israel cannot be expected to sit idly by while a country ruled by men who have promised to wipe Israel off the map acquire the means to do so,” said Seals. “While we should certainly support Israel in its efforts to protect its citizens, we should do all we can to make military action less likely, and that means imposing hard economic sanctions against Iran and unifying the international community against the Iranian regime.”
Seals, an early supporter of the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act, applauded the Senate for passing the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act of 2009 and urged both chambers of Congress to move as quickly as possible to work out a final bill and send it to President Obama for signature.
