One Senator’s Response to the Unemployed: “Tough”

With millions of Americans unemployed, Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning has vowed seven different times to filibuster a 30 day extension of unemployment benefits.  While many who have followed this story have noted the foul language that the Senator has used towards another Senator in expressing his position, what is more troubling to me is that he complained that the debate in the Senate was making him miss a basketball game.

Millions are struggling and he’s worried about seeing a basketball game?

This is exactly the kind of leadership we don’t need in Washington.  Not only is he wrong on the policy; but he’s also wrong in his conduct.  We need leaders in Washington who will focus on creating jobs and protecting families in our economy.  We need leaders who won’t gripe about missing a basketball game while millions can’t find work.  And we certainly need leaders who have more to say to the unemployed than just “tough.”  I will work to create jobs by investing in small business, the biggest job engine in our economy.

Help send me to Congress so that I can fight for you. Let’s raise $10,000 by Thursday so we can show that we mean business.

This is the only open-seat race in Illinois. The Cook Political Report, a non-partisan newsletter, has ranked this seat as one of only two in the country that are held by Republicans and are pure toss-up opportunities. The Rothenberg Political Report, also non-partisan, has said “Despite a dearth of offensive opportunities nationwide, the 10th District is one of the Democrat’s best takeover opportunities.”

Make your first contribution today. Even a donation of $10 will make a difference.

I will fight for a meaningful, sustained economic recovery that allows Americans to live with dignity and job security.
