It’s Still the Economy

Last night, President Obama addressed the country to discuss the state of the union. The top issue of the day is still without a doubt the economy.

It’s no secret that families are hurting. If you haven’t been laid off, you worry every day thinking you are next. If you are a small business owner and still have your doors open, you wonder if you are going to make payroll and how to provide adequate health care for your employees. You worry that local schools are not teaching your children what they need to learn to be successful in life and competitive in a global market. You worry about how to pay for your son or daughter’s college tuition and your parents’ medication. And, you worry about the future, what it holds for you, your family, and the next generation.

In his State of the Union address, the President laid out his plan to continue our economic recovery efforts. Many of his initiatives were similar to the efforts I’ve been calling for to solve our economic crisis.

The first thing we need to do is to stop this economic ship from sinking. In the short term, this means a focus on getting Americans back to work by supporting small business. In the medium term, it means reducing the costs of health care, energy, and education—all of which are rising faster than inflation and making it harder for most families to keep up.  In the long term, it means building an educational system, which will better prepare us to compete in the global economy, and reducing our massive national debt.  If we don’t address these issues, we will not only undermine our own economic growth, but make it much more difficult for the next generation to succeed.

As stated in the Daily Herald’s endorsement of my candidacy, I will be an independent voice in Congress who will advocate for the residents of the 10th District. I have proven that I will fight for our values, no matter the how hard the battle. I’ve stood with you and now I ask you to stand with me to secure our economic future.

Sincerely,
